  10. Heavy Chef Session May ‘Netrepreneurs: Creating Profitable Businesses Online’ Posted in Heavy Chef News, Concocted by Fred Roed May 21, 2008 No comments

A ‘netrepreneur’ is a special breed of techie, businessman and creative. He (or she) is someone who looks at the digital economy as the Wild West of opportunities, and has ridden out on a horse to find them.

Not afraid of all the change happening around us, these important individuals have embraced the continually evolving new technology and made some seriously successful businesses out of them. People like Mark Shuttleworth, Ronnie Apteker (founder Internet Solutions), Herman Heunis (founder Mxit.co.za) and Fiona Phillips (CEO of CyberCellar.com). Read Further

  12. Wing Man or no Wing Man? That is the question. Posted in Website Design, Concocted by Fred Roed May 19, 2008 2 comments
    ah, the eighties...

    goose maverick

Remember Maverick and Goose in Top Gun? Goose was the wing man to Cruise’s Maverick. This meant that, when they’d go to a bar, Goose would be the fall guy and Maverick would score the chicks. Goose was married, so it was cool by him. He happened to be married to Meg Ryan in the movie, so he was stoked to let Maverick be the gloryboy, because that was back when Meg Ryan was really hot. (Just a little movie trivia for you on a Monday morning).

My question today is: ‘But, what if the chick went for Goose?’ Read Further

  16. Can *YOU* make money through blogging? Posted in Digital Strategy, Concocted by Fred Roed May 14, 2008 No comments

I receive a lot of gumpf about ‘making millions online’ and ‘blog your way to profit’. I’ve met people who’ve told me their world domination ideas, and the pivotal part of their strategy requires blogging. Now, I’ve been blogging for almost on 3 years now, which kind of makes me a veteran in the field – at least here on the tip of the Dark Continent – and I’ve received VERY LITTLE money in return.* Read Further

  17. Typography in Web Design Posted in Website Design, Concocted by Fred Roed May 13, 2008 2 comments

    typography

It’s amazing how much detail goes into a website. Think of the functional components, programming technology, tags, site navigation and the personas. Phew! And that’s before we even touch the content.

Design is the glue that holds everything together. Read Further

  18. Global domination through domain names Posted in Digital Strategy, Concocted by Fred Roed May 12, 2008 No comments

So imagine we decide to take over the world through The Heavy Chef Project. We realise, hell yeah, this thing has legs, but what if someone tries to rip us off? What if someone copies us with a similar name so that if someone types in ‘HeadyChef.com’ they get our traffic? Hey! Why not let’s buy all the similar sounding domain names just to be sure. It’s not like it’s going to cost us a lot of money… Read Further

    MegaMedia

South Africa’s marketing community doesn’t know what’s hit them. The Mega Media Expo is on this week at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, and our venerable UK Director is one of the speakers. Considering Mike’s track record of getting people up on stage, holding props like carrots, vegetables, and beetroots… while wearing spiderman masks… it looks like it could be worthwhile. verity.jpg

    verity

I can’t begin to tell you how many people didn’t think this would happen.

Verity, a singer/songwriter came to us 3 years ago. She was up against it. On one side, she had the choice of signing her life away to a record company; on the other she could pack it in and moonlight as a lounge singer. Verity decided to do neither. After some brainstorming, she came up with the idea of selling ‘future albums’. Read Further

  23. The Future of Image Search – Google Styley Posted in Digital Strategy, Concocted by Mike Perk May 1, 2008 No comments

Googles continued push for improving search took another step forward last week when two of its scientists presented a research paper in China. The research outlined the future of image search online.

In simple terms, images are currently indexed by the content that surrounds them, the page itself and the alt tags used to describe them. But Googles so called VisualRank (Page Rank for Product Image Search) means us humans will no longer be needed to help describe what the image is. It uses visual recognition to identify what is in an image in order to categorise it for search. Read Further
