Its official: WWC is the number one web design company in the world

Well accordingly to Google anyway:-)

As you know, you should always be checking your stats on a regular basis and one thing I do is check the keywords people are finding our site for. This allows us to focus some more SEO effort on keywords we are starting to see some action from, if we think it could bring in some good traffic.

We had a great search find us this week: “World no 1 web design company”. So its offical we are the best:-)

Perdeberg sponsors Heavy Chef Sessions

We’re proud to announce that the Heavy Chef Sessions are now sponsored by Perdeberg Wines.

Perdeberg will be providing the refreshment to the evening’s festivities. Perdeberg has been extremely active in supporting South Africa’s internet community, and is following on the success of its ‘Clink to Win’ campaign by engaging with individuals in the marketing and tech sector.

This is in line with Perdeberg’s grounded and intelligent brand personality.

We are happy to be associated with Perdeberg, and look forward to getting stuck into its award winning Reserve on the evening!

[Don't] Watch Carte Blanche this Sunday

Newsflash for our South African readers: Sorry, Verity’s just informed us that the article has been ‘bumped’ to another date. We’ll keep you posted, watch this space. This Sunday, our most musical client, Verity, will be featured on MNet’s Carte Blanche.

They’ve interviewed Verity about her journey over the past 36 months - charting her progress from wayyy back when Verity and World Wide Creative first started brainstorming the idea of selling her album before it was made.

Don’t miss it…Even if it’s only to see yours truly in full Hawaiian glory, mouthing off about social media.

Heavy Chef May Video

We’ve been chuckling all day over the great production that Play.24.com’s Chris, Leezl and co. did with the video of Eric and Charl’s presentations at last month’s Heavy Chef Session.

Check the video here if you can’t view it above:

Keep your eyes peeled for the next one on the 25th of this month. It promises to be another killer session. We’re changing the schedule slightly and pushing the next ‘Netrepreneur’ Session to July. This month, the focus is going to shift a little from our usual topic of profitable websites to ‘Building a Brand in South Africa’.

Sorry for the cryptic nature of this post, but we’re still confirming venue, etc.

Carte Blanche visits World Wide Creative studio

Carte Blanche, South Africa’s premier investigative news programme, visited our studio this morning to interview me on the success of the Verity campaign.

Verity and World Wide Creative have been working for three years with the goal of raising enough money to produce her album. The idea was to sell an album that didn’t exist, and, as it turned out, we reached the goal a few months ago. Verity has just completed the production.

We designed her website, e-commerce facility, her CMS, a newsletter system, her blog, logo, flyers and a host of other social media widgets and gadgets to raise publicity for her cause.

Carte Blanche picked up the story through the press, and are now combining her journey with a piece on how the internet is changing the music industry.

The interview was pretty nerve-wracking. Funny how you always figure out what you want to say when it’s too late. The French call this ‘L’esprit D’escalier’ or ‘the spirit of the staircase’.

If you’re in Africa, the piece should air in the next couple of weeks. Our international readers can pick it up on the Carte Blanche website. Check it out and let me know how I done!

May Heavy Chef Session: Eric, Charl, Beer, Pizza!

Last night was the latest in a long line of Heavy Chef Sessions, with Eric Edelstein (above) and Charl Norman regaling us with juicy stuff from their entrepreneurial adventures.

This particular Session was interesting because we were trying some new stuff. It’s the first of a mini-series called ‘Netrepreneurs’ with successful internet entrepreneurs talking about their journeys. It was also the first with two speakers; and the first that has been filmed in its entirety - thanks to Play.24.com. It was also the longest session we’ve had: it ended at around 8:30pm. Usually we’re in straight after work and out in about 2hrs.

I was well stoked with our two speakers. Eric and Charl have two very different styles of delivery, with Eric being nicely off-the-cuff and Charl a little more methodical.

Eric gave us a fascinating insight into the ‘early days’, with failures eventually followed by great success. We got an idea of some of the twists and turns in getting premises, growth, hiring staff and whether to employ or outsource.

A nugget I learned from Eric’s talk is that if you want to launch an online venture (or any venture for that matter) there has to be a champion. Without someone who eats, sleeps, breathes and lives the business, it will surely falter. This is a wake-up call for some of our own projects in-house at World Wide Creative.

I’ll also be keeping a close eye on Eric’s latest Internet start-up SpringLeap.com.

Then it was over to Charl. I fluffed his intro royally by saying ‘mybroadband.co.za’ instead of ‘bandwidthblog.co.za‘. Eish. Leezl, please edit that one out…

Charl took us through the thinking and direction behind the social networks he and his colleagues have worked on. We got an inside look at Blue World Communities, the strategy behind the different niche groups and how traffic is driven to the sites. Charl gave us an idea of why social media is here to stay, and how the acquisition by 24.com has given them the muscle to take advantage of this exciting channel.

We were then privileged to get a sneak peak into a new project that Charl and his colleagues are working on, but unfortunately it’s top secret for now. That is, until it’s broadcast to the world on Play.24.com video of last night’s session… oop.

Special thanks to Play.24.com for sending a team through to capture us in full flight. Looking forward to seeing that video. Also, big love to Hatfields for the venue, yummy pizzas, and beer on demand.

There was a great bunch of people who attended, including Robyn and Scott from Encyclomedia; Bruce and Andrea from Cape Peninsula University; Frank and Anne-Marelle; David Murray from Cape Venture Partners; Jason; Jason; Bruce; Reg; Patrick; Chris; Daan; Patrick; Jade; Leezl; and of course, the one and only Chris Roper, who disappointingly was on his best behaviour for the night. Thanks all for coming; hope you enjoyed it!

btw. keep watching this space for a) when the video will be live on Play.24, and b) the next Heavy Chef Session.

UCT Graduate School of Business

We’re talking today about the rate of change in today’s world, and the big question: ‘With all this change - How do we build a brand in a digital economy?’

I will put up slides on this blog on this forum asap.

Heavy Chef Session May ‘Netrepreneurs: Creating Profitable Businesses Online’

A ‘netrepreneur’ is a special breed of techie, businessman and creative. He (or she) is someone who looks at the digital economy as the Wild West of opportunities, and has ridden out on a horse to find them.

Not afraid of all the change happening around us, these important individuals have embraced the continually evolving new technology and made some seriously successful businesses out of them. People like Mark Shuttleworth, Ronnie Apteker (founder Internet Solutions), Herman Heunis (founder Mxit.co.za) and Fiona Phillips (CEO of CyberCellar.com).

We’re excited to announce that, over the next three months, we’ve organised a handful of these rare and wonderful people to chat to us about businesses they have started, all happening at the monthly Heavy Chef Sessions.

This month, we’re joined by Eric Edelstein and Charl Norman.

Eric Edelstein:

The legendary Eric Edelstein is a veteran in South Africa’s internet sector. He started Clicks2Customers.com, incuBeta.com and TrafficSynergy.com – all three businesses having received major international success.

Not to be slowed down by success, Eric is also busy with several other ventures, including SpringLeap.com.

Eric also invests in various businesses through his private venture capital fund.

Charl Norman:

Charl Norman is the founder of Blue World Communities, which includes some of South Africa’s fastest growing and most interesting social media portals – including BlueWorld.co.za and ZoopedUp.com.

Blue World Communities has been in the news recently since they’ve just been snapped up by Naspers. Charl is 23 years old, and is gaining a steady reputation as an engaging public speaker. Charl has been featured as a guest lecturer on the UCT Graduate School of Business Nomadic Marketing Course; and is also the author of two highly successful blogs, Carblog.co.za (ranked 6th on Amatomu) and Bandwidthblog.com, which was nominated for best Tech blog at the SA Blog Awards.

Eric and Charl will be talking about their journey to succeeding in this brave new world, charting the factors behind their growth, including missteps and tipping points along the way.

Wednesday May 28th at Hatfields in Gardens, Cape Town. Phone Rowan at the World Wide Creative studio on 0861 932226; or email Rowan here.

Seats are limited. The May Heavy Chef Session starts at 5.30pm, and usually lasts around 2 hours with a bit of breeze-shootin’ thrown in at the end.

The cost: Nutting. Mahala. S’free…! Click here for more information on the Sessions.

Play.24.com will be there to film the procedings.

Also, keep your eyes and ears open for announcements on upcoming Sessions in the next 2 months. Great things are afoot.

Cheers for now!

Next Heavy Chef Session: Eric Edelstein and Charl Norman; Play.24.com will film the event

Great news (although a little late!) This month’s Heavy Chef Session has been announced, with eminent speakers Eric Edelstein and Charl Norman to kick off a new series entitled ‘Netrepeneurs’. The brilliant news is that Play.24.com has agreed to sponsor the event with a film crew.

This is particularly exciting because we’ve noticed that a large portion of our audience is outside of South Africa, where most of the Sessions are held. Now, our European and US readers can get in on the action and view some of the highlights of the monthly presentations.

Read more about the event here.

There are still seats available, so email or phone Rowan at the studio at 0861932226. Get in quick, seats are limited.

WordPress Cape Town Event

As you all know by now, I’m the resident WordPress Geek at World Wide Creative. I love the OpenSource platform and love talking about it and making its existence known to all :)

I would like to let all the WordPress lovers out there know about an event happening here in Cape Town, on 28th May ‘08, where like-minded WordPress developers can get a professional glimpse into the wonderful world of WordPress as a Blogging Platform and CMS.

There are going to be a few WP Heavyweights attending and speaking at the event and I recommend it to WordPress lovers and wannabes.

I will be attending on behalf of Heavy Chef and World Wide Creative.

Watch Mike Perk at the Mega Media Expo this week at the CTICC

medamedia2.jpg

South Africa’s marketing community doesn’t know what’s hit them. The Mega Media Expo is on this week at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, and our venerable UK Director is one of the speakers. Considering Mike’s track record of getting people up on stage, holding props like carrots, vegetables, and beetroots… while wearing spiderman masks… it looks like it could be worthwhile.

Mike is talking about how profitable websites are important in a day and age when people are desperately seeking measurable return from their marketing spend.

Businessmen in Buggies

Mike and I have been tasting the hard life down in George recently. This past week, we were camped at Fancourt to complete an online marketing analysis for a new client. Of course, we had to find appropriate means of transport on the estate.

Using Social Media to market your company

During our Heavy Chef session on Wednesday Dave touched on the importance of links for Google’s PageRank model. Although PageRank is a little dated the concept of greater link popularity is still vitally important for all search engines.

In terms of practical ways in which you can utilise social media to help your link building for SEO as well as help build your brand, there is a really good article written by Jane Copland from the SEOmoz.org team. Its over a year old but still really good and definitely worth reading:

http://www.seomoz.org/article/social-media-marketing-tactics

A nice email to start the day…

These are always nice to see:

Just to let you know I had 3 new enquiries for credit control from the website today - that makes 9 in the last 2 weeks!

This is absolutely phenomenal and way beyond my wildest dreams.

I can only say - THANKS THANKS & THANKS

When you are next over, I would like for us to meet up and I will take you out for a few beers and for a meal. I OWE YOU BIG-TIME!

Whatever you are doing to my website - keep doing it. I am just so busy dealing with new enquiries at the moment it is untrue. When I convert them all, I will be busy employing more staff and taking the business to the next level.

You and your staff are absolute stars - I cannot praise you and them highly enough.

Please feel free to put this testimonial on your website & Blog etc

Kindest Regards,

Jamie
Credit Control Solutions

We started working with Jamie a while back and it is very, very rewarding to see his site succeed in a highly competitive UK market.

Heavy Chef Session March: David Duarte’s presentation on ‘Social Media in South Africa’

Last night we were privileged to witness our old buddy Dave Duarte share some views, thoughts and ideas on Social Media in South Africa.

We outgrew the World Wide Creative studio for this session, which was held at a new venue after a huge increase of interest over the past 2 months. It was a great success, with Hatfields Restaurant in Gardens providing us with a perfect balance of privacy, space and good service (with Alison and Colin doing a sterling job of looking after us - thanks guys!)

We will be sharing some video footage of the event in a short while, but here are some snaps in the meantime…

img_4151.jpg

Above: Dave pouring scorn on a stupid question.

img_4147.jpg

Above: a riveted audience, including Andrea Broome and Bruce Snaddon from Cape Peninsula University of Technology; Shane Dryden from Yuppiechef.co.za; Patrick from Justtheplanet.com; Chris Beech (Flash programmer supremo); Rob Maconochie and Gavin Mandel from Channel Mobile; Kent from IT Direct.

img_4148.jpg

Above: more riveted and engaged audience, with Rowan filming diligently in the background.

img_4149.jpg

Above: …and more riveted audience, struggling to stop themselves rushing the stage. By now, Dave’s rugged good looks, rapier wit and manly intellect was causing problems.

img_4146.jpg

Above: we sent in Mike to cool things down. Thanks Mike.

img_4151.jpg

Above: Things were back to normal after that.

img_4156.jpg

Above: Dave showed us a great example of integration of traditional media and social media with the Peugeot 107 campaign - which you can view here.

Thanks to all who contributed to the evening, including Rowan, World Wide Creative’s legendary studio manager who did much of the behind the scenes stuff to make it happen. A huge thanks, once again, to the legendary Mr Duarte, for providing us with some meaty marketing fare. See you soon, Dave!

P.S. Don’t forget the next Session with Phil Barrett (from Flow Interactive), who will be talking all about usability on websites. Not one to miss, see you there! Email us if you’d like to attend.
