So you’ve registered and setup your Twitter account for your brand / company and you now staring at your only follower. You. What’s the next step in finding and building that online community? Use Twitter’s very own built in tools!

twitter-search

Probably one of the most powerful search engine’s at the moment is Twitter’s search. As relevant and powerful Google is, Twitter is as real-time a search engine you are going to get. Start by searching for keywords and phrases and see what others are talking about with regards to the products, services or community you are wanting to join or start. Then start replying and adding to existing conversations! People always make the mistake of blindly following everyone before actually tweeting. This way, users will find value in what you have to say and they’ll quickly jump on board and engage with you.

Once you have a small and blossoming community of followers, you going to have to employ some form of community management to keep them interested and also to keep growing your number of followers. Keep your Twitter account active even if you only have a few followers in the beginning. Share links, reply to others, follow some of those people who follow you – these are all ways to build your community. Keep in touch by constantly searching for new keywords and stay a breast of your original queries.

So to wrap it up, use search.twitter.com to track keywords and phrases, listen to what everyone is saying first and then engage!
