If you haven’t ever visited I Can Has Cheezburger or FAIL Blog before, you’re missing out on a lot of laughs. The range of humorous sites run by CEO, Ben Huh, have a massive following with over 16 million unique visitors per month. The average amount of visits per day is well over 1 million, with 63% being male. Heavy Chef chatted to Emily Huh, the Director of Community Engagement about the overwhelming success of Cheezburger and FAILblog.
Hi Emily. How many sites make up the Cheezburger Network and which are the most successful?
We have over 50 sites at Cheezburger and our most successful sites are Memebase, FAIL Blog, I Can Has Cheezburger, Know Your Meme, and The Daily What.
How did the idea come about for FAIL Blog?
FAIL Blog came about because people like to laugh at other people’s misfortunes. We all fail and make mistakes, so it’s fun to laugh when other people fail as well. It makes us realize that no one is perfect.
With regards to the submission process, how is content sorted and then selected?
We receive about 15,000 submissions a day, and content is sorted by site. We have a team of editors that look through the content and filter by what is appropriate and what the users will find funny.
How are Cheezburger and Fail Blog monetized?
Most of our revenue comes from advertising. We also do also have our store, lolmart.com, where we sell t-shirts, calendars, and other merchandise.
What is some sound advice that you would give to bloggers who are trying to increase traffic?
If you want to increase traffic on your blog, an important thing to remember is to make sure you are posting on a consistent basis. If users don’t know when you are going to post or if you are only posting infrequently, your users won’t know when to come and it won’t become a regular part of their routine.
What are the future plans for Cheezburger? Anything in the pipeline that you can share with us?
Cheezburger wants to continue being the social humor platform for people and be the place where people can showcase their funny and get their five minutes of happiness a day.
Lastly, what is your favourite meme for 2012?
My favorite meme for 2012 is What People Think I Do vs. What I Really Do
That is certainly the most popular meme among South Africans too! Thank you for taking the time to share your insight with us, Emily. We couldn’t get through the week without our daily dose of humour from Cheezburger and FAIL Blog!
