  2. Augmented Reality – its not just a gimmick Posted in Augmented Reality, Videos, Concocted by Mike Perk April 20, 2010 No comments

With so much hype around Augmented Reality my biggest fear is it will become just another gimmick.  I interview Al Cronje to see how Saatchi@Play have developed carefully stratigised projects using Augmented Reality that add value rather than just the wow factor. Read Further

  3. Heavy Chef Session Feb 2010: “A Taste of the Digital Future” Posted in Digital Strategy, Heavy Chef News, Concocted by Fred Roed February 3, 2010 No comments

Last night, Louis Janse van Rensburg (World Wide Creative) and Justin Spratt (ISlabs) gave us an insight into the future. It was a scintillating session, with both speakers providing a sense of excitement of what’s around the corner.

Louis covered the digital consumer, and what we can expect, and Justin tore into the macro-environmental landscape, sharing loads of love for Telkom along the way.

We gave away some of our new T-shirts at the end, followed by a Q&A session with the audience particularly interested in some of the controversial and contentious future predictions by our favourite (not so skinny) Australian living in SA.

  5. Thinking about Silver Surfers Online Posted in Digital Strategy, Concocted by LouisJvR September 11, 2009 No comments

In a recent chat with a client of ours at World Wide Creative, we got into an interesting discussion around ’seniors’ (that is those people +-60 years and older) and their level of activity on the web and their value to marketers.

So, I did a bit of digging around and found some interesting learnings…. in fact over the last 3 years or so this market, dubbed the “Silver Surfers“*, has become quite a hot topic of discussion… Read Further

  6. Creating New Worlds: Comcast Town Posted in Digital Strategy, Social Media, Concocted by LouisJvR August 25, 2009 No comments

At one of our previous Heavy Chef events in Cape Town, Justin Gomes (FoxP2 Ad Agency) in his talk on “Creativity And Its Power To Transform Business”, told the story of George Lucas and Star Wars, and the importance of creating new worlds

So, when I stumbled across Comcast Town, I was reminded of Justin’s words of wisdom.

  7. Twitter in South Africa: Investigating the Hype Posted in Branding Online, Digital Strategy, Social Media, Twitter, Concocted by LouisJvR August 19, 2009 3 comments

The hype is there, no doubt.

But I think it’s time to put a stake in the ground and do some research into Twitter’s pervasiveness in South Africa… this is what I could find:

    1. According to research company, Sysomos, South African Twitter users make up 0.85% of total Twitter users (that is the 10th largest usership in the world!)
    2. According to Nielsen Wire Twitter receives an estimate 55 million visits per month (7 mil unique visits)

Based on this, I can make an assumption that SA Twitter users generate 467,500 visits per month (59,500 unique visits).

  8. Mayo Clinic – A Practical Case Study on Using Social Media Posted in Social Media, Concocted by LouisJvR June 24, 2009 No comments

An excellent case study for using social media as a marketing and communications tool for non-sexy brands – like Mayo Clinic, a leading medical/surgical clinic based in the US.

This interview by Guy Kawasaki with Lee Aase, social media manager at Mayo Clinic, shows how they make in-depth health and medical news content available directly to patients and interested consumers in order to encourage feedback, dialog, and sharing of information. Read Further

  9. December Heavy Chef Session: What To Expect in 2009 Posted in Heavy Chef News, Concocted by Fred Roed December 12, 2008 No comments

We had a great time on Wednesday night, at the penultimate Heavy Chef Session for the year, with some great pearls thrown down by Jon Cherry, Simon Leps and Dave Duarte.

The topic was ‘What to Expect in 2009′ and was followed by some hearty and rigorous cross-questioning by the audience – mostly directed at a game Simon Leps on the mobile front – and then the usual networking afterwards.  Read Further

    nicholas kuhne

Today we’d like to welcome Nicholas Kuhne to the Heavy Chef’s kitchen.

Born in Bloemfontein (we didn’t hold that against him), Nicholas is an avid cricket player, marketer and youth trends analyst.

Nicholas is also highly regarded on the karaoke circuit and challenges anyone to better his version of ‘My Way’. This was partly the reason why we were so keen to have him in the mix. Read Further

  12. Free Coffee = Free Online Buzz: A Case Study Posted in Branding Online, Digital Strategy, Concocted by LouisJvR October 7, 2008 No comments

    free coffee

Have you heard of Joffrey’s Coffee & Tea Company?

    Essentially, a company that sells… coffee..and…tea – you got that right ;) ?

Well, they launched a brilliant web campaign in the middle of this year to promote their new flavoured coffee range “Jamaican Me Crazy”.

The campaign was based on getting bloggers and techies-alike to ‘beta’-test Joffrey’s new range Read Further

  13. Marketers Horsing Around Posted in Digital Strategy, Concocted by LouisJvR September 30, 2008 No comments

    Horsing around

    marketers

Too many marketers put the cart (new technology) before the horse (your message).

The consequent result is too familiar…

New online campaign is launched with much excitement, gains a little traction from referred users, word-of-mouth and the occasional die-hard web surfer, before quickly losing steam… Read Further

  18. Great Viral Marketing Posted in Branding Online, Digital Strategy, Online Advertising, Concocted by Mike Perk March 11, 2007 1 comment

    Tourtshirt
In my opinion viral marketing is still the best way to generate good traffic to your site and build your brand online super quick. Viral Marketing is one of those things that loads of people try but few succeed with. You have to be unique, offer something that captures the imagination and relates to your audience.

I’ve just picked up a post on Matt Cutts blog linking through to Bill Slawski’s blog SEO by the Sea. He talks about a fantastic viral marketing idea Trent Reznor (from nine inch nails) came up with to take fans on a journey around the web starting off with a clue on the back of their tour T-shirts. Being new to South Africa I would be interested to know if anyone out there has seen any good use of viral marketing within the SA music industry. In my opinion its still the best way of drumming up interest in artists online. (drumming up – you get it? Okay, never mind).

  20. Marketing to the MySpace Generation Posted in Social Media, Concocted by Mike Perk September 12, 2006 4 comments

I came across an interesting article yesterday that talked about the economics of social networking highlighting MySpace as a prime example.

As a web company that works with mainly small businesses a website can be an important investment and in the main must return some form of profitability. Its therefore really important that we try and grasp the dynamics of how a new generation is interacting on the web. I believe the future of online business will be less about searching for a product and buying it, but more about a decision made due to a network of interaction with other users. Heck, its happening already!

Personally, I love systems and the feeling it brings of control, Yes I am a control freak. But the unfortunate truth is, as someone working in the web industry, promoting particular ways of marketing I have to be more open to an organic approach. I see it a bit like being a Jedi in Star Wars. There is this universal energy, "The Force", that you need to tune in to. It’s not about trying to manipulate it but about understanding it and working with.

Anyway, before I get to deep into the ways of the force, check out this article:
