  1. Heavy Chef Session Feb 2010: “A Taste of the Digital Future” Posted in Digital Strategy, Heavy Chef News, Concocted by Fred Roed February 3, 2010

Last night, Louis Janse van Rensburg (World Wide Creative) and Justin Spratt (ISlabs) gave us an insight into the future. It was a scintillating session, with both speakers providing a sense of excitement of what’s around the corner.

Louis covered the digital consumer, and what we can expect, and Justin tore into the macro-environmental landscape, sharing loads of love for Telkom along the way.

We gave away some of our new T-shirts at the end, followed by a Q&A session with the audience particularly interested in some of the controversial and contentious future predictions by our favourite (not so skinny) Australian living in SA.

  2. 5 Ways South African Consumers will use the Internet in 2010 Posted in Digital Strategy, Social Media, Concocted by LouisJvR December 4, 2009 5 comments

It’s that time of the year again where every digital marketing expert/guru/genius/yoda/messiah will shout from the hilltops on what they think the digital marketing trends for 2010 will be.

(do a search on 2010 digital marketing trends and you’ll get the picture)

A lot of noise indeed and often lacking context I believe… Read Further

  3. Review: Heavy Chef Session on Youth Marketing Posted in Heavy Chef News, Videos, Concocted by Yolandi Janse van Rensburg August 31, 2009

At the Heavy Chef Session last Wednesday in Jozi we took a peek into the world of Youth Marketing with Andrea Kraushaar from Youth Dynamix and Marc Kornberger from Student Village. With a turn out of more than 50 guests, we sure enjoyed seeing all the new faces including people from Deloitte, Quirk eMarketing, FNB, ABSA and the South African National Blood Service. It was also great seeing some familiar faces like Greg Durst from Horizon Equity. Most of the socializing took place on the Balcony at JWT with its beautiful view over Rivonia and great drinks provided by our sponsors Corona, Carlsberg, Perderberg wine and (our latest edition) Glaceau Vitamin Water. Thanks guys.

Fact is 2009 is going to be a tough year no doubt, with the grim global and local economic outlook taking centre stage.

However, an offset of these circumstances is that 2009 has a couple of things we can look forward to – specifically within the digital environment in South Africa… Read Further

  6. December Heavy Chef Session: What To Expect in 2009 Posted in Heavy Chef News, Concocted by Fred Roed December 12, 2008

We had a great time on Wednesday night, at the penultimate Heavy Chef Session for the year, with some great pearls thrown down by Jon Cherry, Simon Leps and Dave Duarte.

The topic was ‘What to Expect in 2009′ and was followed by some hearty and rigorous cross-questioning by the audience – mostly directed at a game Simon Leps on the mobile front – and then the usual networking afterwards.  Read Further

  7. Value Creation in a Changing World Posted in Digital Strategy, Heavy Chef News, Concocted by LouisJvR December 2, 2008

How have business models changed over the years? How have they adapted to changing consumer patterns and thus changing value propositions?

A very useful little model (see below) by Dave Duarte from Huddlemind.net tries to explain this by highlighting the difference between Industrial Age Value Creation and Attention Age Value Creation. Read Further

  8. Marketers, Get Your Digital Shift Together! Posted in Branding Online, Digital Strategy, Concocted by Fred Roed December 1, 2008

Marketing agencies can be forgiven for feeling a little insecure right now. Across the globe, scores of well-manicured fingernails are being gnawed to the quick. Friday afternoon champagne and sushi parties are being traded in for toasted sarmies; and the lines of coke have made way for lines of worry.

At a time like this, we can take heart from Chuck Norris. “I thought Credit Crunch was a new breakfast cereal,” said Chuck recently.  Read Further

  9. Welcome to the Knowledge Age Posted in Digital Strategy, Concocted by Guest October 9, 2008

    knowledge age

On my numerous flights up and down the country I have had the pleasure of sitting next to a range of interesting characters, and  as someone with a very low boredom threshold I generally start a conversation to make the time…fly.  The questions invariably lead to what you do for a crust, and as soon as a say I am engaged in trend forecasting I tend to get this question, “Oh, so what’s cool right now?”  With a straight face I reply with “Black”.
