A recommended read courtesy of RWW’s recent post on “Community Building 101 for the Bootstrapped Startup“.
RWW follows the stellar growth of Tip’d – a four month old financial news site – and what they’ve done to cultivate their web community.
An excerpt for Tip’d’s Community Director, Muhammad Saleem:
“There really isn’t any secret to our success. In fact, it’s community building 101 in the truest sense. Instead of focusing on ourselves, we’re focusing on what the financial blogosphere (i.e. the content creators) wants, and what the financial news readership (i.e. the content consumers) wants…”
In short, Saleem highlights some of their new features on their site that is designed to accelerate their community building efforts – check them out:
- SocialTickers - Focus on making it easier for your community
- Video feed – Information comes in all shapes, sizes and formats
- Inviter tool – Bring your friends
- Facebook - Facebook matters and so does sharing
- Top users, top domains, ambassadors – The importance of acknowledgement
Personally, I found this post very useful, just purely for the simplicity of Tip’d’s reasons for applying ’social media’ tools – far removed from the often over-hyped use of all-too-boring jargon such as “listening”, “engaging”, interacting”". Simple and practical. That’s how I like it.
From a business point-of-view, would also be interesting to find out what Tip’d’s revenue model is – surely not only online advertising?
