Top 5 Social Networks Outside the Big 3 (Part 2 of 5) Posted in Heavy Chef News, Videos, Concocted by Tatenda Mutsekwa,

In our last article I started the discussion of the top 5 social networking sites outside the big 3. I started by looking at V Kontakte and its growth. It is amazing how popular VK is to the extent that Facebook is an underdog. I’m so impressed. This article is going to look at social network number 2, which is powered by Google (and no it’s not Google+). I think that new social network needs some time to grow then I will consider it as a top 5.

So what is the other social networking site does Google have? It’s called Orkut named after its creator Orkut Büyükkökten.  Orkut was started in 2004, the same time Facebook was launched. According to Techland that was one of the initial problems. Released for worldwide usage the social networking site could not fully compete with Facebook and MySpace. But, it is definitely popular in Brazil and India. In 2008 Google announced that Orkut would be hosted in Brazil, which I think is a testament to its popularity there. According to Alexa orkut.com.br is ranked 107 which is higher than the generic orkut.com ranked 113. In Brazil it is ranked 7th below Facebook which is ranked 3rd.  In India orkut.co.in is rated 15th below the big 3. According to Wikipedia Orkut has about 66 million active users.

It is interesting to see a social networking site which was meant to be for worldwide use only taking off in specific regions. We shall see if these users get swallowed up by the Google mothership with its shiny new Google+ platform. If you would like to check out the social network for yourself, here is a video telling you all about it.
