Failure is somewhat frowned upon in our society. Despite this, we have over 100 accelerators in South Africa alone. Those accelerators host thousands of startups every year, and guess what?
Most of them fail.
Yup, it sucks to be a failure - but that's what happens to most entrepreneurs nowadays. Despite this, we carry on slogging. And rightly so, as we're the very reason why innovation happens, job creation occurs and the economy rolls on.
Enter the latest event series to hit our shores, the very anti-establishment sounding, er, "Fuck-up Nights" (FUN for short).
And so, Cape Town Office (CTO) is proud to be hosting the fifth chapter of FUN in Cape Town, on Monday, 4th September 2017, Bob’s District Six, 46A Canterbury St, Zonnebloem, from 18h00 to 21h00, doors open at 17h30.
And for a very short time (before Friday 1st Sep, 5pm) Heavy Chef is giving away 5 tickets to our community. How do you apply? Simple, just send us an email and tell us one spectacular way that you have failed in your life on earth so far.
This is the fifth FUN installment in the Mother City after a self-imposed winter interval, and for this one we are collaborating with CoCreate2Accelerate, a program in Cape Town initiated by the Dutch Consulate General and Startup Safari.
Never heard of Fuck Up Nights?
This friendly get-together stems from the need of sharing the business failures that local entrepreneurs overcame and that allowed them to achieve the hard-sought success that eventually followed.
“We look at successful entrepreneurs and we imagine a rosy path to success; on the contrary, it has more than often taken many failures to perfect strategies and executions. FUN provides an informal playground for sharing those dear failures and support a tremendous learning curve among business people” says Lizelle van Rhyn, founder and Director of Cape Town Office.
Started in Mexico in 2012, FUN is a global event in cities like New York, London, Tel Aviv and Barcelona that follows a standard format. Each evening features three to four speakers, who address the audience for 7 minutes, using 10 images to support the discussion. Engagement is key; after each speaker, questions are opened to the floor, followed by a relaxed session to grab a drink and get to know new people.
If you think you’ve got a F*Up of your own, contact Lizelle on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tickets are R50 and available online via QUICKET - https://www.quicket.co.za/events/32944-fuckup-nights-cape-town/
CoCreate2Acclerate is a company tailored for Dutch scale-ups / startups that want to grow their business in South Africa and Africa. 1. The intensive program of 14 days where they work together with a local scale up / startup company
2. The light program of 5 days comparable with a normal Bootcamp
Both programs have individual sections but they will both end at the Innovation Summit where there will be a Dutch Booth. Corporates will be involved to pose challenges in their sector that can be cracked by the participants. Starting 28th of August and finishing on 9th of September.
