Michael Deon: How Blockchain-based Online Game Augmentors Raised $500k In 24hrs

Michael Deon, CEO of Augmentors, regaled the Heavy Chef audience on how he went from a 'cartoon-drawing loser' at school to launching the biggest augmented mobile game on the planet.

Augmentors is a game created by Michael Deon and Kyle Haffenden. Augmentors is the first ever Blockchain-based augmented reality game in existence. Augmentors is backed by South African-born Internet entrepreneur turned venture capitalist Vinny Lingham.

Earlier this year, the startup raked in more than $500 000 in just 24 hours, making it the first ever crowdfund campaign done via a cryptocurrency. Michael and Kyle first pitched their concept on Shark Tank South Africa in 2016 and received investment from two of the panel.

Michael clearly needs to keep a few secrets (Augmentors' investment team, Newtown Partners, were sitting in the front row) and he was reticent to reveal too much about the actual game itself. However, he shared his very inspirational story with us - from failing his final year at school, to postponing his wedding and then eventually getting noticed after over 70 emails. In this talk, Michael covers the story from Shank Tank South Africa to gaining over $ 1 million in an Initial Currency Offering (ICO) held in early 2017.

This event was a new era in the Heavy Chef brand. It was our first paid event and was sold out within two weeks. Additionally, it was also our first event at the scintillating venue space, Workshop 17, and our first event with exciting new sponsors Recruit Digital and PayFast.
