It’s that time of the year again. Last year we called for your nominations for SA’s Top 5 Most Exciting Startups, and we were inundated with candidates. The ultimate winners were announced at Workshop17, in the Cape Town Waterfront in December 2017. This December, it promises to be bigger and better. Heavy Chef is partnering with Nedgroup Investments to ensure that this year is a bumper event, with popular radio and television personality Mo Flava coming on as MC to announce this year’s most popular nominations.

The idea behind the event is to celebrate South Africa’s efforts in the startup sector and ending off the year with a lens on what we’ve achieved.

“It’s been a long slog for all of us,” says Heavy Chef CEO Fred Roed. “Heavy Chef itself is a startup, and we’re certainly feeling it. We have a small team trying to do big things. This is an excuse to let our hair down, reflect on the achievements of these remarkable companies and honour the contribution they’re making to the world.”

Last year, Heavy Chef received over 100 nominations, which were whittled down to Yoco, JUMO, Wala, Zoona and Sweepsouth. The entry mechanism is simple: nominate your candidate and provide a one liner on how they are changing the world.

2017’s winners: two of the winners have raised astronomical next-round funding, with Yoco gaining a $16m investment and JUMO raising over $50m in 2018.
