We had the opportunity to welcome a surprise guest on the Heavy Chef stage last week. Mike Schalit joined our CEO Fred Roed and Jos Dirkx to speak around our headliner of the night: Doing business across borders. Mike has been voted the most influential person in the South African advertising, and previously, the country’s top Creative Director for eleven consecutive years. Although he prefers to go by the title Creativist, Mike is also the founding partner and CCO of Joburg based ad agency Net#work BBDO.
Mike spoke to Heavy Chef about how he is using creativity to make a real difference, pioneering the world’s first non-profit agency model called MAL. The MAL project is based on the premise “we MakeALiving by what we get – we MakeALife by what we give”. The foundation is responsible for countless corporate CSI projects to make good stuff happen across South Africa.
Through the MAL project, 13 libraries have been built for communities across South Africa, and they are accessed by 20 000 children every month. Each library aims to inspire the next generation of imagination, to show our youth that reading and dreaming of a better future is a great way to start building one. MAL will launch their 14th library on 24th April at Cecil Road Primary School in Salt River.
