Heavy Chef, in a collaboration with Discovery SA, is excited to bring you Elizabeth Lee Ming, Gareth Cliff and Richard Poplak for another exciting edition of the ‘Inspire’ Sessions, a ‘Media Mavens’ event that will take place on 19th September 2019 in Johannesburg.
Not so long ago, media was comprised of only print, radio, TV and outdoor (or OOH, ‘Out Of Home’). One had to craft a message then syndicate it by buying space on these channels in order to communicate to an audience. In contrast, today’s digital media landscape is a vast, convoluted minefield. Heavy Chef and Discovery SA are therefore honoured to have three of the most eloquent practitioners in the field on stage to speak on their experiences digging the trenches and laying the groundwork.
“We believe this is one of the most critical topics in business today,” said Anton Ossip, CEO of Discovery Insure yesterday. ”It’s essential for entrepreneurs to understand how media channels are changing and how to leverage them to access customers.”
For this Inspire Session, we have one speaker for each of the three most exciting and most explosive areas of media disruption:
1. Audio media (Gareth Cliff)
2. News media (Richard Poplak)
3. Social media (Elizabeth Lee Ming)
Please note that our previous speaker, Nunu Ntshingila can no longer attend due to unavoidable circumstances.
However, we have a stellar replacement in Elizabeth Lee Ming, a senior member of the Facebook team and a world-class speaker herself. With over 20 years extensive experience in B2B and B2CMarketing on both client and agency side, Elizabeth has worked in South Africa, the UK and the USA in digital, social and customer relationship media. Elizabeth was recognised by the Direct Marketing Association South Africa as the Direct Marketer of the Year in November 2015 at the annual Assegai Awards.
Daily Maverick ’s Richard Poplak is one-part wizened old journalist and one part tech-revolutionary. His reputation aligns with the battle-hardened Daily Maverick mission, Poplak stands for truth - as controversial as that truth may sometimes be. He’ll be joining the Heavy Chef community to talk about how the Daily Maverick is pioneering a new model in building a media business.
Radio legend Gareth Cliff will be taking to the stage to speak on his journey transitioning from popular radio show host to podcasting pioneer via his startup audio-network CliffCentral. Cliff has earned respect from the audio community by trailblazing into a space which was relatively unknown, but stands to grow into a significant audience across the African continent. Cliff’s network is closely following international trends, with networks such as Spotify and Stitcher achieving record growth over the past year.
“The ‘Inspire’ sessions were birthed to bring together some of the world’s greatest technologists, leaders and creatives in a series of learning experiences that we’ve curated for our community of entrepreneurs,” says Heavy Chef CEO Fred Roed. “Our speakers include some of the biggest names in the African media landscape. Having them share their views and experiences on our stage is an incredible privilege.”
This installment of the ‘Inspire’ series will be held at the Discovery Headquarters, 1 Discovery Place, in the heart of Sandton, Johannesburg. Seats are limited and attendees can purchase tickets at www.heavychef.com/experiences or www.quicket.co.za.
