Gabe has invested in over 30 Silicon Valley companies and was one of the original consultants to Uber in their early days of starting up the business. Gabe founded Modernize, which became one of the fastest growing companies in Silicon Valley, and now heads up Upshift Partners, a Venture Capital firm that invests in high impact startups. In an exclusive masterclass for Heavy Chef community members, Gabe taught us the secrets of scaling a business/project, and it turns out most of us have been doing it wrong the whole time.

Talking to Fred Roed, founder of Heavy Chef, Gabe emphasised on how delivering a compelling narrative leads to successful storytelling, which then leads to sales. Luna-Ostaseski was one of the early consultants at Uber and was instrumental in creating the ‘Uber Rush’ programme, which led to Uber’s legendary growth over a short period of time. Luna-Ostaseski shared 8 core modules/steps that result in a compelling narrative when followed attentively in sequence.

The event on Tuesday 4th December 2018 at Workshop17 to showcase the winners was even more outstanding.
Startups Unearthed Africa is an online competition aimed at raising the profile of African hardware or software companies across the global mining sector, with applications open to any business across the continent that has a prototype, product or service that can impact industry. Companies do not need to have worked on a mining project before, they just need to have exciting technology solutions that can make a difference.

Bradley Elliott is the CEO of South African digital marketing agency Platinum Seed, which partnered with Visa and research firm World Wide Worx to create the largest ever Online Retail survey conducted in Africa, focusing on eCommerce. Elliott delivered an inspiring talk, originating in some of the major signals from China’s eCommerce market and then reverting to lessons from African eCommerce trends. Conn Bertish is our second speaker at Tuesday's Heavy Chef event, focusing on Grit, and he is remarkably hard to kill. Conn is one of the country’s top creative thinkers, having worked with some of the leading creative agencies in Africa. In 2006, Conn was diagnosed with a form of adult malignant brain cancer, leaving him at the mercy of the world's most feared disease. A collaboration of tech ecosystem organisations, including Silicon Cape, Heavy Chef, Startup Grind Cape Town, Future Females, Startupbootcamp, Workshop17, Inner City Ideas Cartel and CiTi, today announced the launch of the inaugural ‘Cape Town Startup Week’, which aims to celebrate a year of entrepreneurial endeavour in the Western Cape. The week has been set for Monday 3rd December, running to Thursday 6th December 2018.
