Our first evening event in April tackles a topic that is on many South African's minds: doing business internationally.

The stunning Bishops Mitre Theatre in Rondebosch, Cape Town, hosts global speaker Jos Dirkx, an award-winning media and communications advisor, international public speaker, creative strategist and world-traveler. Originally from The Netherlands, Jos was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and has since lived in twelve countries across the world, having visited near 100. Jos is passionate about telling stories that change the world: whether through the arts, by creating content that challenges the status quo, through her global speaking engagements and work with clients on creative communications, or through the award-winning not-for-profit organization Girls & Football SA she founded in South Africa. Her background in theatre and the arts, combined with economics and technology, fuels her passion to merge education, creativity and EdTech.

Joining Dirkx on stage is Heavy Chef founder, Fred Roed, founder of digital agency WWC, which he sold in 2013 to Saratoga Group. WWC operated across 17 countries in Africa, and won multiple awards and widespread recognition for its pioneering digital work, particularly in the field of web development. Roed is an Amazon best-selling author and winner of "Best Contribution To The Digital Industry" in 2015.

This event will focus on the power of purpose in creating a globally relevant company. Anyone wanting to start a company that transcends borders should not miss this.

This event is for curious bystanders, interested onlookers, fringe investors, smart corporates, ambitious entrepeneurs, technophiles, misfits, smarty-pants and skinny chefs alike. What you waiting for? Book your ticket already.

About The Speakers

Jos Dirkx is an award-winning media and communications advisor, two-times TEDx speaker, creative strategist and world-traveler.

Having spent her early childhood across Bangladesh, Senegal and Brazil, Jos has launched various organizations, initiatives and movements to challenge inequality, to increase global access to accurate education and to drive diversity and inclusion. She strongly believes everyone deserves access to accurate education and she strives to make this happen by integrating socially conscious content with the world’s most advanced tech platforms, and through workshops, trainings and educational content. Jos works with global corporates, individuals and forward- thinking initiatives to bring this work to life.

Fred Roed is the CEO of Heavy Chef Pty Ltd, which is a community platform for entrepreneurs. The name ‘Heavy Chef’ comes from the saying never trust a skinny chef and aims to celebrate the ‘people that eat their own food’. Heavy Chef is the most popular monthly leadership and tech event in South Africa, with Yoco, Xero, CueAV, Taxify, Payfast, WWC, Whipping The Cat, Backsberg, CBC, Sir Fruit and Vida as partners. 2018 saw the release of Roed’s first book “The Heavy Chef Guide To Starting A Business In South Africa”.

Fred recently launched the Heavy Chef Foundation, aimed at providing funding for high potential emerging entrepreneurs, and is the co-founder and former CEO of digital transformation agency World Wide Creative, with clients such as Hyundai, Jaguar / Land Rover, City of Cape Town, Rand Merchant Bank, Vodafone, Virgin Mobile and The Foschini Group. Fred is a recognised public speaker and consultant. Fred is obsessed with brand strategy and digital media - with side habits of pizza, Hawaiian shirts, movies, craft beer and fine wine. Fred Roed was Head of Agencies at the IAB SA (Interactive Advertising Bureau SA) between 2013 and 2016, and was awarded “Best Individual Contribution to the South African Digital Industry” in the 2015 Bookmark Awards held at the Turbine Hall in Johannesburg. Fast Company Magazine named Fred as one of The Top 100 Creative People In Business 2015.

Fred is also pretty sure he saw Elvis once, at the Pick n’ Pay in Tableview.
