Gareth Cliff, Richard Poplak, Elizabeth Lee Ming
Before 2000, media was seen as straightforward. There were four channels, print, radio, TV and outdoor. In order to communicate to an audience, you had to craft your message, then syndicate it by buying space on those channels. Now, in the digital age, the media landscape has become a vast, convoluted minefield. We've asked three of the most eloquent practitioners in that terrain to articulate their own significant experience digging the trenches and laying groundwork.
For this Inspire Session, we have one speaker for each of the three most exciting and most explosive areas of media disruption:
Audio media (Gareth Cliff)
News media (Richard Poplak)
Social media (Elizabeth Lee Ming)
Please note that our previous speaker, Nunu Ntshingila can no longer attend due to unavoidable circumstances.
However, we have a stellar replacement in Elizabeth Lee Ming, a senior member of the Facebook team and a world-class speaker herself. With over 20 years extensive experience in B2B and B2CMarketing on both client and agency side, Elizabeth has worked in South Africa, the UK and the USA in digital, social and customer relationship media. Elizabeth was recognised by the Direct Marketing Association South Africa as the Direct Marketer of the Year in November 2015 at the annual Assegai Awards.
Richard Poplak is one-part wizened old journalist, and one part tech-revolutionary. Representing Daily Maverick, Poplak has poked more local hornets' nests than nearly anyone working in media today. Despite having somewhat controversial views, Richard Poplak stands for truth above everything else. In order to preserve journalistic integrity, Daily Maverick is forging a unique new path in building its audience. Poplak will share how DM is pioneering a new model in building a media business.
Finally, one of the best-loved and most controversial figures in South Africa, Gareth Cliff has successfully transitioned from terrestrial radio to podcasting pioneer. With his startup audio-network CliffCentral, Cliff is looking to establish the foremost outlet for podcasting in Africa. Incendiary smart and scathingly witty, Gareth Cliff is the most authoritative speaker on the evolution of radio in Africa.
