Danie Bester

Photography And Business

In this recipe, Danie Bester - fine art photographer and founder of Digital Photography Courses (DPC) - unpacks photography for entrepreneurs.

A former Correctional Services officer, and with no photography qualifications, Danie Bester received the Admired in Africa Grand Master award in 2018, recognising his mastery of and contributions to photography in Africa.

At the age of 35, he sold the family’s second car to buy his first SLR camera and five years later traded his safe but colourless career for that of a photographer. He held his first solo exhibition in 2010, the same year that he started Digital Photography Courses (DPC), which has since become one of South Africa’s top photography schools.

Danie regards himself as a visual artist who uses the camera as a creative tool, and sells his work through art galleries and interior designers.

About This Recipe

Regardless of what your business is, you need good pictures to help sell your products. Can you just point and click with your phone, or do you need a professional who has all the gadgets and comes with an eye-watering price tag? The answer is neither, says Danie Bester, professional photographer and founder of Digital Photography Courses (DPC), one of South Africa’s top photography schools.

In this recipe Danie gives guidelines around the equipment you need to do proper product shots yourself, when you should call in a professional, and how to brief that person to get what you want.

He shares a bunch of useful tips, techniques and principles, unpacks the differences between good, bad and great photographs, and explains why impactful photography is more about what you leave out than what you put in.
