I started singing in front of people at an early age, and I never felt very nervous - I loved it. I just felt like I wanted to sing and I wanted people to hear me. You know in church when you finish singing and they're like, "Amen!" - I wanted that. I was feeding off that and it made me happy. Seeing people loving the music. So from that time, I realised it was something that I really wanted to do.

The good part of writing a song is that when you tap into writing one, you are now inside it like it's a road that you're constructing. So if it's a love song, you are in a world where it's Romeo and Juliet, like, you're part of it. If you are writing it from the point of view of Romeo, it's no longer about Romeo - YOU are the Romeo. And if you are going to die, you're going to die and you're going to feel the pain. Those are the emotions that you can now put in the song. And all you need to do is promise yourself that people are going to feel the same emotion that you're feeling in that moment.

So the process of writing music all goes down to knowing the theory of music and knowing how to connect with your own music. For me, most of the time I start with the guitar. I start with finding a melody that I can connect with. When I start falling in love with the progression of chords or the melody of the chord, it draws me to that feeling. Then I can start writing, maybe one word or it will come as a phrase.

When you get inspired and you feel like you have a song inside you, it's very easy to know that your song is done and is ready. It's easy for a creative to create something and love that product and it's easy for that product not to be accepted by other people. Because sometimes I might have a song that really connects with me but doesn't connect with the rest of the world because it says things about me.

Patience led me to the point of meeting Aron Halevi at a market in Greyton. Who would have thought that would be the time when all these breakthroughs would come came to be true, right? So Aron Halevi came to me, and he was barefoot. He just came to me and said, "Dude, I see something in you. I want you to play some songs for me." I didn't know who he was but I played, and he said, "You know what? You know Freshlyground, right? I answered, "Yeah, I know Freshlyground." He said, "I founded Freshlyground," and I was like, "Oh my God, I didn't know!"

It's very interesting because I didn't know that I was creating something that would have value. I was just playing around - I was at Aron's place and I'm playing this song, this chord and I thought, "This will be cool." Because for me, it had that reggae vibe.

Divine penned the Heavy Chef song, especially for us. It's become something of an anthem for us and is used in most of our content. Be careful - it's a serious earworm and you'll find it playing in your head more times than you will care for. 

The reason why I say music is underrated when it comes to society is that we hear about it and we don't get to appreciate it, but it's playing a very important role in our emotions, in our social life and adding happiness to us. It plays a very, very, very important role, and it has also played a very important role in my life. All the hardships that I went through, music was just there to calm me down.

My advice would be don't give up. Don't be afraid to do things. One day, someone is going to recognise you. Like Aron Halevi met me at a market in Greyton and he was not wearing shoes. I looked at him from bottom to top and I thought, "This guy is not wearing shoes. Why should I listen to him?" But he made me play songs during my break and, from that time, he just told me, "I want to work with you".
