Tuck In

Jonathan Foster-Pedley is not your stereotypical academic. For one thing, he used to be an airline pilot; for another, he believes academics are there to serve their students. An innovative businessperson, academic and expert in curriculum design, he has worked on six continents and has over 40 years of international working experience, 30 of those as an academic and business-schools leader. Before joining academia, Jon was a pilot and then a senior executive in the European aerospace industry. He has guided and facilitated international and local multicultural sales, marketing and management teams. He is also a consultant, coach (working as a visiting professor in strategy, creativity and innovation), and a writer and speaker.

Here in South Africa he built and still directs the only quadruple-internationally-accredited business school in Africa, Henley Africa. He is the former vice chair for the South Africa Business Schools Association and currently chairs the Association of African Business Schools and the British Chamber of Business for Southern Africa.

About This Recipe

One of the best things you’ll learn in this recipe is to not be invested in absolutes. Instead of achieving the highest test score, look at how far and steep your journey of learning has been; instead of training for a specific future job or scenario, focus on becoming a master learner so that you can learn your way through whatever the world throws at you.

Jonathan Foster-Pedley, dean and director of Henley Business School Africa, talks passionately about the kind of leadership that organisations, societies and our country need. He broadens our thinking on what a business is, explains the difference between big “E” and small “e” empathy and urges entrepreneurs to cultivate habits that calm the chattering mind.

Yes, you can expect references to academic theory and models, but they only enhance the practical advice and deep wisdom Jon shares in this recipe that is more fireside chat than lecture.
