Pitching to Partners

Nick Dreyer, CEO of Veldskoen Shoes, reveals that you don’t have to be a fashion guru to build a successful shoe business. The secret lies in pitching to the right partners.

Tuck In

A self-described failed events guy, Nick Dreyer hit his stride as an entrepreneur with Veldskoen Shoes, the business he co-founded with his school mate Ross Zondagh. From a 2x2m office in Cape Town, Veldskoen has grown to be South Africa’s most exported footwear brand, selling in 32 countries.

Nick started out in the hospitality business, being mentored by the great South African entrepreneur Paul Harris of FirstRand. At the age of 36 he struck out on his own, but was not as successful in the events industry as he had hoped to be. In 2016 he and Ross started Veldskoen Shoes as a side hustle.

Nick is passionate about sharing the Veldskoen story, and has developed a number of keynote speeches that unpack the lessons and the simple tools that have contributed to the brand’s success.

About This Recipe

How does one turn a nation’s cultural goods into a highly successful business venture without destroying its integrity? Nick Dreyer, CEO and co-founder of Veldskoen Shoes, answers this question - and many more - with the passion on which South Africa’s most exported footwear brand was built.

In this recipe, he shares how to leverage the big moments, that it is possible (but not advisable!) to start trading without having actual product in a warehouse, and that you don’t have to have all the answers before you start acting on a great idea.

Nick also highlights the importance of solid partnerships, unpacks Veldskoen’s approach to trademarking and reminds us that a happy ending is possible even when a business starts out in dark and difficult times.

What You'll Learn

One of the best and most impactful lessons in this recipe, is the importance of sticking to your guns when you feel driven to execute your idea. Most people laughed at the ridiculousness of commercialising the veldskoen, but business partners Nick and Ross knew they were onto a good thing.

You will also learn that it is possible to think differently about trademarking rules, that crowdsourcing a solution can yield fantastic results, and that when a product is compelling enough even royalty and movie stars aren’t able to resist it.

The recipe also features practical advice on how to approach retailers with a product or idea.
