Launching A Product

Shannon McLaughlin is the founder and CEO of Ubuntu Baba, an entrepreneurship journey that has taught her invaluable lessons about launching a product.

Tuck In

Shannon McLaughlin has looked at the world from a different angle for most of her life. Fed up with the four walls of a high-school classroom, she opted for homeschooling so she could have more time to surf and build a life around all the things she loved doing most.

She began her entrepreneurial journey as a freelance (and self-taught) web designer, specialising in user experience and telling her clients’ stories.

Motherhood changed Shannon’s professional trajectory as much as it did her personal life. Having discovered the almost-miracle of 'babywearing', the idea to design, manufacture and market the perfect baby carrier soon followed. From this idea, Ubuntu Baba was born in 2015 - a primarily online business that sells organic hemp baby carriers that are 100% South African manufactured.

About This Recipe

Where to start when you have a product in mind that doesn’t exist yet? For Shannon McLaughlin, founder and CEO of Ubuntu Baba, that starting point was her father’s design and manufacturing expertise and experience. With his support and guidance, she developed the prototype of a baby carrier she believed would be a lifesaver for parents and infants alike.

But how do you convince your potential customer base that yours is the solution they’ve been looking for? In this recipe, Shannon answers that question, describing tactics ranging from roping in friends and family to gatecrashing moms’ groups and convincing strangers to put their precious bundles in a carrier nobody has seen before.

She gives valuable and practical tips on how to design your online presence to create trust in consumers’ minds, and dispels the myth that only professional web designers can build e-commerce sites. Shannon’s recipe is not only a masterclass in launching a new product, but will open your mind to the importance of being tuned in to your customers’ minds and hearts.
