“Jack of all trades, master of none” does not apply to serial entrepreneur Simele Shanga who believes in becoming master of whatever he turns his hand to. From feedlotting a few years ago to pioneering ghost kitchens in South Africa, he approaches his ventures with a passion for innovation and growth.

His background in retail, agriculture and logistics has contributed to the success Simela and his partners have had in founding Jozi Cloud Kitchens in 2019. The first facility was opened in 2020, and today the company operates and rents out 10 kitchens under one roof.

Simele's recipe for success includes the skills to sell your product better than anyone else, the ability to pivot and adapt when necessary, and a deep understanding of both sides of your offering.

About This Recipe

The ability to order food online from restaurant-quality kitchens and have it delivered to your door was a lifeline during the dark days of Covid lockdowns. These so-called ghost kitchens have, however, proven their worth even during normal times and now offer compelling opportunities to experienced restaurateurs and first-time entrepreneurs alike.

Simile Shanga and his partners were at the forefront of the ghost kitchen revolution in South Africa, and have learned countless lessons since opening their first kitchen in 2019. In this recipe, the co-founder of Jozi Cloud Kitchens generously shares lessons, experiences and insights that range from what to consider when choosing a location for your facility to how to negotiate with sceptical landlords and sell the concept to hesitant tenants.

A particularly compelling aspect of the recipe is Simele’s views on how ghost kitchens are evolving post-Covid and the role they can play in South Africa to unlock opportunities for entrepreneurs.
