I think, for me, it's always been about people. I actually studied physiotherapy and that was my background. My wife and I travelled around the world for a few years when we first got married. During that time, we just both felt a stirring and, I'd say, a calling to full-time vocational ministry.

I would say innovation - that's a big part of it. Because you have to be innovative, where others see obstacles, you have to see opportunity. Some people can see the world that way, people have led or pioneered into spaces. It's about seeing what is already there. Like Uber - we had the GPS, we had the cars, we had the drivers, we had everything we needed, but it took someone to be able to see that idea to make it actually happen. So innovation.

I don't think we can talk about improving our country or moving forward as a nation if we don't at least have a conversation around entrepreneurship. Because I think, particularly in South Africa's context, the high unemployment rate is not going to be solved by a government policy or by state enterprise. There has to be entrepreneurship. There has to be that kind of development.

Our motto for our community is, love God, love people and make a difference. I think, for us, if we really want to make a difference, then we have to interrogate what making a difference looks like. A book that has really impacted us as a community was When Helping Hurts by Brian Fikkert and Steve Corbett. It's this idea that sometimes in our attempt to do good, we can actually do more harm. 

So we try and hit it in a holistic kind of human approach. We work on developing skills and abilities, give aid where needed because sometimes people actually need a foot up, they need investment to get their stock - so we engage in micro-lending. Then you've got actual investing in the human being's character and development. Those are the legs that we have and we've got different programmes that run around those spaces.

There was a lady in our church who hosted one of our entrepreneurs and they formed a relationship - when this woman heard about what she was doing in her community, they just formed a strong connection. They started to meet up outside of our programmes and our conferences, and she went to go see this little homestead that this woman had started. She ended up bringing them toothbrushes because they needed toothbrushes and then the next time she went, there was another need. And they just had this amazing relationship. Eventually, over years and years, the story evolved in incredible ways. This woman ended up winning Woman Entrepreneur of the Year and they started an orphanage. She was travelling overseas and she now employs about 50 people.

We live in a world where everyone's shouting at each other, noone's listening. And I don't think social media helps that. I'm not anti-social media, I think it can be a great space - my kids can Facetime their grannies and there's this beautiful connection in that. So I'm not vilifying all social media, but I do think that unfortunately the way algorithms work and the way that these companies make money, we're the product.

We build a life of passion and purpose. You don't find a marriage of passion and purpose. You build a marriage of passion and purpose. I think especially the younger generation needs to hear that because we think of passion as something we've just got to open the right door to. And if we haven't, we must be in the wrong relationship, we must be in the wrong job. Actually, no, you might be in the exact right place, but it's about building a life and those things take time.

There are moments where you feel like you're going to give up and you feel like, "Why am I doing this? Am I the right person?" and you want to run away from it. To understand that upfront is quite a helpful thing, to set your expectations right that this is not going to be up into the right. But then at the same time, to never lose hope that things can be better and that we can actually make a difference. We literally can make a difference. It's this tension of holding on to the very real facts that life is hard and difficult, but never losing the ultimate hope that things can be better and that they will be better. It's navigating that tension of hope and despair at the same time.

I would say embrace the discomfort. I'm an athlete - I like to run - and what I've learned from top athletes is that the only way to get comfortable with being uncomfortable is to put yourself into uncomfortable situations. We have a culture that says 'avoid pain' but I've found that pain is our best method of growth. I say this from a privileged position, but the reality is we all experience pain and pain is when we grow the most.
