In this recipe, the founder and CEO of Thursdays Lingerie and Swimwear, Shona Macdonald, lays bare the good, the bad and the ugly of textiles manufacturing in South Africa.

Tuck In

Shona Macdonald is a quirky blonde who’s not afraid of the spotlight, having appeared on Survivor: Return of the Outcasts, Survivor: Champions, and Shark Tank South Africa.

Blessed with a buxom bosom herself, she can relate to millions of women whose C-cup-plus figures are not properly catered for by the one-size-fits-all clothing industry. When inspiration struck on a Thursday, she followed her entrepreneurial spirit, tenacity and blind optimism to create a lingerie and swimwear brand designed to support women with boobs.

Not only does Thursdays Lingerie and Swimwear help women to appreciate and be comfortable with their curves, it also helps to keep South Africa’s critically important textile industry alive, especially in the area of specialised lingerie design and manufacturing. Thursdays was named one of Heavy Chef’s Most Exciting Startups in 2018.

Shona’s latest project is the matchmaking app, Cliqq.

About This Recipe

Do you have to know how to do everything in the business you want to start? Oh no, says Shona Macdonald, founder and CEO of Thursdays Lingerie and Swimwear. While you do have to know enough to be a leader that doesn’t frustrate the rest of the team, it is far better to find and contract in experts than trying to do it all yourself.

In this recipe, Shona recounts her experiences with the South African textile industry, the future she hopes to help create for textile workers, and the extreme satisfaction that comes from creating a garment that perfectly meets a customer’s needs.

She shares her thought processes when it comes to naming a business, her views on the leadership skills an entrepreneur should have and how to prepare yourself for entering an industry you know very little about.

What You'll Learn

This recipe is a mini-masterclass in textiles manufacturing in South Africa, entering an unfamiliar industry, and building a brand around treating customers and team members as co-creators.

You will learn the wisdom of starting small, even if it inflates unit costs, and the importance of being able to keep a close and personal eye on the factory where your order is being manufactured.

There are furthermore valuable insights in how to assemble a team of experts and the skills you need to effectively oversee them, as well as the leadership mindset necessary for entrepreneurial success.
